The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, MTHE, is pushing sweeping reforms to Technical and Vocational Education and Training, TVET, as it seeks to close the skills gap and create more jobs for Sierra Leonean youth.

In strategic engagements this week, MTHE officials met with the BIO VET Project, a delegation of European agricultural and vocational education experts, and the Sierra Leone Chamber for Agribusiness Development, SLeCAD. Talks focused on modernizing curricula, embedding entrepreneurship, and strengthening links between training institutions and the agribusiness sector.

The BIO VET team shared European models for applied learning and innovation. Both sides agreed to explore cooperation in curriculum development, staff exchanges, joint research, and support for small and medium agribusiness enterprises.

In a separate meeting led by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, plans advanced to upgrade an existing technical institute into a Centre of Excellence in Agriculture. The centre is designed to merge training, production, and market access to improve skills and employability in agriculture. Participants reviewed international models that combine practical instruction, research, and industry partnerships.

MTHE said the reforms are aimed at making TVET demand-driven and directly responsive to labour market needs. Officials emphasized that sustainable job creation depends on aligning skills training with what employers and the economy actually require.
