Freetown Polytechnic is set for a major classroom upgrade after government, UNDP, and China delivered a large consignment of furniture under the China Education Project.

The first batch of 770 desks and chairs was handed over this week, with an additional 400 units expected soon. Once completed, the donation will refurbish more than 15 classrooms and directly benefit over 5,000 tertiary students.

The intervention forms part of a nationwide push to improve learning conditions. Under the same project, about 17,700 desks and chairs are being distributed across institutions in Sierra Leone to address infrastructure gaps and improve classroom comfort.

Speaking at the handover, Minister of Technical and Higher Education Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie said the investment was critical for expanding access to quality technical education. Chinese Ambassador H.E. Zhao Yong described the support as part of China’s commitment to Sierra Leone’s human capital development. UNDP Resident Representative Fredrick Ampiah noted that the partnership demonstrates how coordinated donor support can deliver tangible results for students.

Officials said the upgraded classrooms will help polytechnic management improve attendance, teaching quality, and student welfare.
