More than 300 Sierra Leoneans are now seeking new employment in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Monday, 14th June 2026, after the departure of the hospital ship Global Mercy, which concluded its three-year humanitarian mission in the country.

The 311 Day Crew members, trained across multiple disciplines while serving aboard the vessel, are appealing to government ministries, private firms, and development agencies to tap into their skills, following the ship’s exit from Sierra Leonean waters.

The call was made during a farewell ceremony held aboard the Global Mercy in Freetown.

Edward Carew, who served as Master of Ceremonies, said the former crew includes men and women with experience in administration, logistics, communications, hospitality, transport, patient support, information management, and cross-cultural teamwork.

“These are skilled Sierra Leoneans whose CVs are ready,” Carew told the gathering. “We urge government agencies, private sector employers, and development partners to consider them for available opportunities.”

Crew members worked alongside international staff from over 60 countries, gaining exposure to global standards in customer service, workplace safety, and operations management.

Addressing the event, President Julius Maada Bio commended Mercy Ships for its impact on healthcare delivery and human capital development. He called on local employers to absorb the trained personnel.

“Sierra Leone needs skilled and disciplined citizens,” President Bio said. “The young men and women who served on the Global Mercy have acquired experience that can contribute meaningfully to national growth.”

Since docking in 2023, Mercy Ships has delivered thousands of free surgical procedures and provided training for hundreds of local health professionals. The mission also generated jobs and transferred technical and soft skills to Sierra Leonean staff.

Stakeholders say securing sustainable employment for the 311 workers would consolidate the long-term benefits of Mercy Ships’ investment in the country.
