Labour Officials Arrest 10 Chinese Nationals in Kono for Permit Violations

By Kadijatu Bangura, D.S

More than 10 Chinese nationals have been arrested at Mambudu Checkpoint in Kono District for allegedly travelling without valid work and residence permits, as authorities intensify enforcement of Sierra Leone’s immigration and labour laws.

The arrests were carried out by the Commissioner of Labour and an enforcement team during a nationwide compliance operation targeting foreign nationals operating outside the Unified Work and Residence Permit regime. Officials said the group was intercepted while heading to Kumaroh Village and had not regularised their immigration or employment status as required by law.

The nationals were later transferred to the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters in Koidu for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Commissioner of Labour said the operation is part of a broader government crackdown on undocumented foreign workers, particularly in the extractive sector. He noted that the exercise reinforces the state’s commitment to lawful employment, national security, and the protection of mineral resources from illegal exploitation.

“Foreign nationals can no longer enter, reside, or work in Sierra Leone without the necessary legal documentation,” the Commissioner stated.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as the matter progresses.
