The Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has arrived in Egypt to join other African election leaders at a high-level continental forum.

Mr. Alpha, who also serves as National Returning Officer, and ECSL Director of External Relations, Albert Massaquoi, Esq., were received on Sunday, July 5, 2026, by officials of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Cairo. The delegation will participate in the 10th Annual Continental Forum of Election Management Bodies and the Association of African Electoral Authorities General Assembly in Sharm El-Sheikh from July 6–8, 2026.

The event is being organized by the African Union Commission’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, in collaboration with the Association of African Electoral Authorities, and hosted by Egypt’s National Elections Authority.

This year’s forum is convened under the theme: “Diaspora (Residents Abroad) Voting: Progress, Gaps and Prospects.” Senior officials from Election Management Bodies across Africa will examine strategies for credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections.

Discussions will focus on election administration, stakeholder engagement, communication, and reforms to strengthen electoral governance on the continent. The forum also serves as one of the AU’s key platforms for peer learning among EMBs.

Mr. Massaquoi said the Commission’s participation reflects its commitment to building institutional capacity and supporting democratic governance in Africa.

“Sierra Leone’s participation underscores the Electoral Commission’s commitment to promoting electoral excellence, strengthening institutional capacity, and contributing to continental efforts to advance democratic governance,” he stated.

The delegation is expected to take part in both the technical sessions and the AAEA General Assembly, reaffirming the country’s role in promoting transparent and inclusive electoral processes across Africa.
