The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority has transferred a combined US$19 million to government coffers over the past three years, Parliament’s select committee was told during an oversight visit to the Authority.
The delegation, led by Leader of Government Business Hon. Mathew Sahr Nyuma, was briefed by SLPHA Director General Yankuba Askia Bio on the Authority’s revenue performance, infrastructure upgrades, and operational capacity.
According to figures presented, SLPHA contributed US$4 million in 2023, US$7 million in 2024, and US$8 million in 2025.
Bio said upgrades to berth infrastructure have expanded the port’s operating capacity and now allow larger vessels, including Panamax ships, to dock at the facility.
The parliamentary team toured port facilities and later inspected the proposed seaport sites at Kent and Banana Island.
Lawmakers commended SLPHA management and staff for the progress recorded. However, they urged the Authority to improve public communication so citizens better understand its role and contribution to national development.
The visit forms part of Parliament’s broader oversight of public institutions. It comes as SLPHA continues to focus on improving infrastructure, operational efficiency, and revenue generation to support Sierra Leone’s economy.
