Sierra Leone and Spain have officially taken on the roles of co-facilitators for the Just and Inclusive Energy Transition Platform of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) for the 2025-2026 term. This announcement was made during a virtual meeting convened by IRENA, where the two nations succeeded the outgoing co-facilitators, the United States and South Africa.
Kandeh Yumkella, Sierra Leone’s representative and a renowned energy expert, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, “I am honored to partner with Laura Martin Murillo and my esteemed colleagues as we lead this global platform over the next two years. Together, we will strive to ensure a sustainable and inclusive energy future for all.” The platform is crucial in advocating for a fair and equitable energy transition, ensuring that the adoption of renewable energy benefits everyone, particularly marginalized and developing nations.
As co-facilitators, Sierra Leone and Spain will work together to advance policies that support a just and inclusive energy transition, addressing both environmental and socioeconomic challenges. This collaboration highlights the growing leadership of both countries in the global renewable energy dialogue, positioning them as key players in shaping the future of sustainable energy on the international stage.
