Three people, including a 5-year-old girl and two women from the same family, were killed early Monday after a compound wall collapsed during hours of heavy rain in Freetown. Two other children are still missing, the National Disaster Management Agency has confirmed.
According to an NDMA situation report released August 3, 2026, approximately six to seven hours of torrential rainfall triggered flash flooding, landslides, and severe erosion across multiple communities in the capital.
The deadliest incident occurred in the Metchem community at a compound known as Kailahun Court Barray. A wall collapsed on a building, killing a mother, her daughter, and the child’s grandmother. Their remains have been taken to the mortuary.
In Portor, Juba, more than 300 houses were completely flooded, displacing hundreds of residents and destroying property. Two children from the area are reported missing and search operations are ongoing.
At 44 Femi Turner Drive, intense erosion caused a perimeter wall to collapse, sweeping three vehicles away.
The NDMA also confirmed that eight community boreholes in Juba — the main source of drinking water for residents — have been contaminated by floodwater and are unsafe for use.
Field officers have been deployed across affected areas to conduct search and rescue operations and preliminary assessments with partner agencies. The Agency said its Situation Room has been activated to monitor incidents and coordinate emergency response.
The public has been advised to stay away from hillsides and steep slopes during rain, avoid dumping refuse in drains, keep children away from flooded areas, and follow official weather advisories.
NDMA noted that the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency had forecast intermittent heavy rains for July, August, and September.
The Agency extended condolences to bereaved families and thanked community volunteers serving as first responders.
