In a celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has launched a Cultural Heritage Club at Annie Walsh Memorial School in Freetown. This initiative aims to promote Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage and values among students.
Founded in 1849, Annie Walsh Memorial School is one of the oldest educational institutions for girls in Sierra Leone, known for its commitment to empowering young women through education and cultural awareness.
During the launch event, Deputy Minister Dr. Kadijatu A.G. Kamara emphasized the importance of instilling knowledge of traditions in children to prepare them for the future. “Understanding our cultural heritage is essential for fostering pride and identity among the youth,” she stated.
Acting Principal Mrs. Williams praised the initiative, encouraging student participation and engagement with their cultural roots.
The event featured cultural performances from the Scripture Union, Marie V Entertainment, and artist Alieu Melody, showcasing the diverse talents of the students and community. The performances elicited enthusiasm and pride among the attendees, highlighting the significance of cultural expression.
The Cultural Heritage Club aims to create a platform for students to explore and celebrate their heritage, ensuring that the values and traditions of Sierra Leone are passed down to future generations.
