On Tuesday, 15th October 2024, a weekly press briefing was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Conference Room, where panelists discussed the ongoing transformation and digitalization in information sectors.

Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw, Chairman of the Right to Access Information Commission (RAIC), acknowledged the Minister of Information and Civic Education and members of the Fourth Estate for their efforts as he reflected on the commission’s 10th anniversary. He highlighted the introduction of an official website as a significant milestone in their work. This development marks a progressive approach towards transparency, facilitating information dissemination and public awareness of the access to information law. The RAIC has been actively organizing workshops with various public authorities to build capacity for both information seekers and providers.

Dr. Shaw reported a notable increase in compliance requests over the years. In 2020, the commission received 112 requests, which rose to 144. By 2022, this number surged to 360 requests, with 345 successfully processed. The commission’s efforts have garnered recognition, achieving a 90% compliance rate and extending its visibility beyond the country through participation in international forums such as the Organization of Information Commissioners and the Africa Network of Information Commissioners. He emphasized the urgency for capacity building in the region, noting that Sierra Leone has co-sponsored initiatives aimed at improving access to information.

Josephine Kamara, Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), shared insights on the transformation within the organization since her appointment. She outlined a strategic plan developed within six months, focusing on pluralism as a core principle of state media.

Kamara emphasized the importance of Human Resource Management, particularly in fostering relationships with staff who meet the institution’s criteria. She highlighted the need for strategic communication to achieve significant impact through collaboration with partners.

The SLBC is committed to transitioning from analog to digital platforms. Kamara expressed her dedication to providing clear and accessible information, while also apologizing for any previous inconveniences experienced by audiences.
