Over 2,500 bags of rice are being distributed to Ebola virus disease survivors and members of the Polio Persons Development Association across three districts in Northeast Sierra Leone under a new humanitarian relief drive.
The distribution, which began on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, is being coordinated by Healey International Relief Foundation in partnership with Tzu Chi, Caritas and Lanyi Foundation. The Ministry of Social Welfare Office on Field Road in Makeni is serving as the central hub for the exercise.
A total of 2,542 ten-kilogramme bags have been allocated. Of that number, 2,424 bags are designated for EVD survivors and 118 bags for PoPDA beneficiaries. Under the arrangement, each female survivor is receiving four bags, equivalent to 40kg of rice, while each male survivor is receiving three bags, or 30kg. PoPDA members are each receiving three 10kg bags from the association’s allocation.
The district breakdown shows 472 survivors in Bombali receiving 1,646 bags. In Falaba, 48 survivors in Kumala are to receive 165 bags, while 181 survivors in Tonkolili covering Mile 91 and Magburaka have been allocated 613 bags. The allocations account for the full 2,424 bags earmarked for EVD survivors in the Northeast.
Speaking on behalf of the national leadership, the Deputy Director for the Northeast region thanked Healey International Relief Foundation and its partners for their continued support to EVD survivors and PoPDA members. The Deputy Director also appealed for further assistance to vulnerable groups.
“We remain grateful and look forward to receiving more support of this nature,” the Deputy Director said.
The intervention underscores ongoing efforts by humanitarian organisations and the Ministry of Social Welfare to support communities affected by past public health emergencies and other challenges.
