The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has announced that the Peace Corps is now accepting applications from American citizens to serve as volunteers in Health and Education programmes across Sierra Leone.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 5, 2026, the Embassy said the recruitment is open to Americans residing in Sierra Leone who want to support local communities through volunteer service.

The Peace Corps, a U.S. government agency, deploys American volunteers to work alongside community leaders, strengthen local capacity, address priority needs and build lasting ties between Americans and host communities.

The current recruitment drive includes three categories: Maternal and Child Health Educators, Education Teachers, and Peace Corps Response Volunteers.

Maternal and Child Health Educators will support work in early childhood health, nutrition and community wellness. Education Teachers will serve in primary and secondary schools teaching English, mathematics and science, and will collaborate with Sierra Leonean teachers to strengthen foundational learning.

The Peace Corps is also recruiting experienced professionals for its Response programme, which offers short-term, high-impact assignments in specialized areas.

To qualify, applicants must be at least 18 years old and U.S. citizens. The Embassy said it is seeking individuals committed to collaborative service and making a lasting contribution.

Interested applicants have been urged to apply by December 15, 2026, through the Peace Corps website: https://www.peacecorps.gov/ways-to-serve/service-assignments/browse-opportunities/peace-corps-volunteer/?countries=130

The recruitment forms part of the Peace Corps’ broader mission to promote community development and strengthen people-to-people connections between the United States and partner countries.
