The Government of Sierra Leone has unveiled a US$2.5 million consignment of essential medicines and reproductive health supplies, a major push to cut maternal and child deaths nationwide.
The life-saving drugs, now stored at the National Medical Supplies Agency, are being prepared for immediate dispatch to hospitals and clinics across the country.
Health authorities say the package targets the leading killers of women and children. It includes specialized commodities for emergency obstetric care, general deliveries, Caesarean sections, and healthcare emergencies. Key items will treat postpartum hemorrhage, severe sepsis, hypertension in pregnancy, and malaria.
Speaking at the unveiling in Freetown, Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby said the investment reflects government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations.
“This investment demonstrates Government’s continued commitment to protecting critical health services for women, children and families across Sierra Leone,” Dr. Demby stated.
The delivery comes as the Ministry pushes its 300DaysOfActivism for Triple Zeros campaign. The initiative aims to achieve zero preventable maternal deaths, zero unmet family planning needs, and zero gender-based violence.
To ensure the drugs reach patients, officials announced strict accountability measures. Every item will be tracked from NMSA central warehouses directly to frontline health facilities to block leakages and misuse.
“The full trajectory of the commodities will be monitored,” a ministry statement said, “to safeguard this investment and guarantee it serves the people it was meant for.”
