FREETOWN — The Government of Sierra Leone has disbursed Le300,000 in welfare grants to 15 organisations delivering critical services to vulnerable groups in the capital.
The presentation was made on Monday, September 7, 2026 at the Ministry of Social Welfare headquarters in New England Ville. Each beneficiary received Le20,000 to support work targeting children, women, youth, and older persons.
Minister of Social Welfare Melrose Karminty said the support underscores government’s recognition that it cannot tackle social welfare challenges alone.
“Government cannot deliver social welfare services in isolation. Partnerships with local and international organisations are essential to complement state efforts,” Minister Karminty stated.
She praised the organisations for continuing operations despite a tough global funding climate that has left many civil society groups struggling to stay afloat.
The initial rollout benefits groups working in child protection, elderly care, and women’s empowerment. Beneficiaries include Don Bosco Fambul, Jesus Disciples, King George VI Memorial Home, All for One, Beckman, The Raining Season, Dorwontony Organization for the Aged, Vanity Children’s Home, Mahenmahen, Laughter Africa, Princess Promise, Network for Children in Need, Revera Children’s Home, St. George’s Foundation, and Initiative for Women and Girls Empowerment.
Representatives of the organisations described the grants as “timely support” during a period of funding strain.
Beyond direct cash support, Minister Karminty also announced progress under the Professional Social Work Regulatory Law. The law will establish a regulatory council to strengthen oversight and professional standards across the sector.
The Ministry further reaffirmed plans to expand the welfare grant scheme to the provinces to ensure vulnerable populations outside Freetown also benefit.
