The United States Embassy in Freetown has revealed the major impact of its $22 million investment in Sierra Leone’s health sector, which has helped deliver millions of life-saving supplies across the country since 2018.
The investment was channeled through the Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM), a U.S.-funded initiative that has strengthened the country’s ability to prevent and respond to disease outbreaks.
According to the Embassy, the programme has delivered:
– 11.1 million malaria test kits
– 5.7 million insecticide-treated bed nets
– 5.1 million HIV-related supplies
– 400,000 COVID-19 treatment supplies
Beyond supplies, the programme also built local capacity by training 790 health workers to manage and sustain the health supply chain system, ensuring essential drugs and commodities reach those in need.
The GHSC-PSM is scheduled to close in September 2026 after eight years of operation in Sierra Leone.
The Embassy said its closure will leave behind a stronger, more self-reliant health system that is better equipped to identify and contain public health threats before they spread.
It added that investing in Sierra Leone’s health security not only protects citizens but also contributes to global health security, including the safety of the United States.
