Sierra Leonean karate legend Victor Edward Amara, popularly known as Sensei Vic, has made history after being appointed World 2nd Vice President of the Commonwealth Karate Federation (CKF).

He becomes the first African to occupy the prestigious position, marking a major milestone for Sierra Leone and for karate across the continent.

The appointment places Sierra Leone in a prominent position in the international administration of the sport and is seen as recognition of Amara’s longstanding contribution to karate, his leadership experience and his commitment to developing the sport across Africa and the wider Commonwealth.

Sensei Vic is President of the Sierra Leone Karate Federation and a 7th Dan Black Belt holder. He has spent more than three decades in martial arts as an instructor, referee and sports administrator, contributing to the growth of karate in Sierra Leone and other African countries.

His experience includes serving as technical coordinator responsible for developing karate in Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Liberia and Guinea.

In March 2025, he was appointed First Vice President of the Commonwealth Karate Africa Federation, with responsibilities including coordinating activities among Commonwealth karate federations in West Africa.

Beyond his administrative roles, Amara has consistently championed grassroots development, encouraging young people to take up karate and supporting the training of coaches and referees to strengthen the sport’s foundation.

His latest appointment is expected to further strengthen African representation in international karate administration, while creating opportunities for greater collaboration, athlete development and the promotion of the sport across Commonwealth nations.
