The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has launched an outreach program in Bonthe District to promote the Medium-Term National Development Plan (2024-2030). Led by Minister Kenyeh Barlay, the initiative aims to engage local stakeholders and align the district’s growth trajectory with national development goals. In her keynote address, Minister Barlay expressed gratitude for the community’s support of President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for Sierra Leone, while acknowledging the significant challenges faced by the district.
Minister Barlay emphasized that the Medium-Term National Development Plan is designed to accelerate development by addressing local needs in line with the government’s “Big Five” priorities. These include sustainable economic growth and resource management, with specific goals such as climate change adaptation, commercialization of local products, and support for mechanized agriculture. She highlighted the importance of projects like improved road networks, enhanced access to electricity, skills training, and targeted loan programs for women, all aimed at creating sustainable job opportunities and bolstering local industries.
Community leaders responded positively to the Minister’s initiatives. Joseph Moiwo, head of civil society organizations in Bonthe, praised the Ministry’s transparent approach to involving residents in the development process, underscoring that achieving long-term success with the Big Five—especially the Feed Salone initiative—requires active participation from all Sierra Leoneans. Paramount Chief Foday Sheriff urged residents to take ownership of government initiatives, emphasizing Bonthe’s agricultural potential and the government’s investment in agricultural machinery and irrigation systems as a foundation for community empowerment.
Parliamentary support for these initiatives was reinforced by Hon. Alusine Bash Kamara, who expressed appreciation for Minister Barlay’s efforts and reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to advancing legislation that addresses Bonthe’s unique challenges. Local leaders, including Bonthe District Council’s administrative head Dauda Moiwo and Deputy Municipal Mayor Jonathan Vandy Turay, expressed gratitude for prioritizing Bonthe in national development discussions. Residents voiced hope that continued government engagement would lead to improvements in road infrastructure, electricity access, affordable transportation, and educational facilities, ensuring that the Medium-Term National Development Plan benefits the entire community.
