Police investigators in Freetown-East have been urged to master the law before charging suspects, as the Sierra Leone Police intensifies efforts to improve investigations and secure stronger prosecutions in court.
The one-day training, held at the Ross Road Police Station on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, focused on criminal law, investigative procedures, case file management and court processes.
Delivering the lecture, the Head of the Sierra Leone Police Legal and Justice Support Department, Assistant Commissioner of Police Joan Bull Kamara, cautioned investigators against rushing to charge suspects without first establishing the legal elements of an offence.
ACP Bull Kamara stressed the need for accurate and well-maintained case files, strict adherence to proper investigative procedures, and regular consultation with the Legal and Justice Support Department for legal guidance.
She said poor preparation and weak understanding of the law continue to undermine cases in court, and urged investigators to take their professional responsibilities seriously.
Addressing the participants, the Freetown-East Regional Commander, Assistant Inspector General Brima Kanneh, called on investigators to strengthen their working relationship with police prosecutors and take full ownership of cases assigned to them.
AIG Kanneh said investigators must have a thorough understanding of their cases to present evidence clearly and confidently during court proceedings.
The session also gave officers an opportunity to raise concerns and seek clarification on challenges relating to investigations, legal procedures and professional conduct.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the Freetown-East Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Aminata Norman, thanked ACP Bull Kamara for sharing her expertise and contributing to the professional development of investigators in the region.
Police authorities say the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen officers’ understanding of the law and improve the quality of investigations and court preparation across the country.
