Opposition lawmaker Hon. Ibrahim Barrie has challenged the Government to match its economic claims with real improvements in the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans, as he opened the debate on the President’s Address in Parliament.

Barrie, of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), was entrusted by the opposition leadership to deliver the opening contribution to the four-day debate during the State Opening of the Fourth Session of the Sixth Parliament.

In a wide-ranging address, the Bombali District MP examined the state of the economy, agriculture, education, drugs, infrastructure and governance, and offered what he described as constructive alternatives in the national interest.

On the economy, Barrie said macroeconomic stability must translate into affordable food, manageable transport fares, increased purchasing power and better living conditions for citizens.

He called for greater transparency in petroleum pricing, accountability in the management of fuel subsidies, and a sustainable pricing framework that protects consumers while safeguarding public resources.

Turning to agriculture, Barrie urged the Government to strengthen the Feed Salone programme through investment in mechanisation, irrigation, storage, processing and market access.

He argued that increasing production alone would not be enough unless locally produced rice is made competitive and farmers’ incomes are improved.

On education, the opposition MP called for urgent attention to teachers’ welfare, including timely payment of salaries, professional development, motivation and improved working conditions.

He described teachers as central to the success of the country’s education reforms and the future of its children.

Barrie also addressed the growing drug crisis, advocating a comprehensive national response built on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration, alongside tougher action against drug trafficking networks.

He said young people affected by drugs must be given opportunities to rebuild their lives and contribute to national development.

On infrastructure, he raised concerns over road safety and project delivery, particularly along the Masiaka-Kabala corridor, calling for transparency in road contracts, timely completion of projects, improved maintenance and stronger road safety measures.

On governance, Barrie emphasised parliamentary oversight, effective public institutions and responsible management of public resources. He further called for concrete action on the recommendations of the Auditor-General.

He maintained that the role of the Opposition goes beyond criticism, noting that it must scrutinise policies, expose implementation gaps, demand answers and propose alternatives.

“Sierra Leoneans need measurable results rather than more government announcements,” Barrie said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the concerns and aspirations of residents of Bombali District and Sierra Leoneans generally remain central to parliamentary representation and national development.

Barrie added that the Opposition will continue to support government policies and programmes that deliver meaningful benefits to citizens, while demanding accountability where implementation falls short.
