The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Sierra Leone have signed a significant agreement worth USD 105 million aimed at enhancing the country’s agricultural sector. This initiative, formalized by Bernard Hein, IFAD Regional Director for West and Central Africa, alongside the Ministry of Finance, follows the Climate Resilience Energy Transition Dialogue (CRET-24). The project marks a crucial investment in Sierra Leone’s rural economy, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices.

Over the next eight years, the project is expected to improve the livelihoods of more than 62,000 households, directly benefiting approximately 373,000 individuals. With a primary emphasis on livestock development, the initiative aims to foster economic resilience in rural communities. A key component of the project is its commitment to gender equity and youth empowerment, ensuring that at least 40% of beneficiaries are women and 30% are youth, including individuals living with disabilities. This inclusive approach seeks to address longstanding social inequalities within the agricultural sector.

Minister of Finance Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura praised the initiative for its transformative potential, stating, “This project aligns perfectly with the government’s agenda for economic diversification and poverty reduction through sustainable agriculture.” By improving livestock production and market access, the program aims to strengthen food security and create employment opportunities. Ultimately, this collaboration between Sierra Leone and IFAD is positioned to play a critical role in empowering marginalized groups and supporting the nation’s agricultural economy.
