Ministry Sets Record Straight on Archbishop’s Views

The Ministry of Information has issued a clarification regarding its recent statement on the ongoing deliberations surrounding the Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Bill. This clarification follows concerns raised about remarks attributed to Archbishop Edward Tamba Charles during a meeting on January 2nd, 2024, where various stakeholders, including government officials and religious leaders, convened to discuss the implications of the proposed bill. The Ministry aimed to address misunderstandings that have emerged from its earlier communications.

In a public notice released on January 6, 2025, the Ministry addressed interpretations of its earlier communication that suggested the Archbishop had formally endorsed proposed amendments to the Bill. Officials stated that, following subsequent engagements with the Archbishop, it was confirmed that while he appreciated the government’s willingness to engage religious leaders, he and the Inter-Religious Council have not made a public or formal declaration on the matter. The Ministry emphasized its commitment to constructive dialogue with all parties involved.

However, in an official disclaimer dated the same day, Archbishop Tamba Charles refuted the Ministry’s claims, clarifying that he has not made any public statements regarding the proposed modifications to the controversial bill. He expressed concern about the misrepresentation of his views and stressed the importance of accurate communication in such significant discussions. The Archbishop reaffirmed his position on the need for careful consideration before any declarations are made.

According to Archbishop Tamba Charles, during a meeting held on January 2, 2025, with religious leaders, government representatives, and the Parliamentary Legislative Text Committee, he merely supported a request for religious leaders to review the proposed amendments before making any declarations. This statement highlights the Archbishop’s intent to foster a collaborative approach among stakeholders while ensuring that religious perspectives are adequately considered in the legislative process.

The Ministry reiterated its dedication to collaboration with all stakeholders, including religious groups, to develop solutions that respect Sierra Leone’s diverse values. It called on stakeholders to actively and constructively participate in discussions for the advancement of the Bill and the nation’s progress. Both the Ministry and the Archbishop emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue to ensure that all voices are heard in shaping the future of reproductive health legislation in the country.
