This morning, Abdul Fatoma, Chief Executive of the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), met with Chernor Bah, the Minister of Information and Civic Education, to discuss the status of the long-awaited data protection bill in Sierra Leone.
The meeting underscored the critical importance of data protection rights and their potential economic benefits for the nation. Fatoma emphasized CHRDI’s ongoing advocacy campaign aimed at raising public awareness about the necessity of robust data protection measures. He highlighted that safeguarding personal data is especially crucial in the digital age, particularly for vulnerable groups such as women and girls.
Minister Bah acknowledged the bill’s significance, particularly its role in safeguarding the data of women and girls. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enacting the legislation to enhance data security for all citizens.
CHRDI reiterated its dedication to engaging with stakeholders and the public to stress the need for a comprehensive data protection law. This legislation is viewed as a vital component of upholding democratic values and ensuring the privacy and security of personal information in Sierra Leone.
The dialogue between CHRDI and the Ministry of Information represents a significant step toward establishing a data protection framework that aligns with international standards, fostering a secure digital environment for all.
