On January 10, 2025, a four-story building undergoing demolition collapsed on Malama Thomas Street in central Freetown, resulting in the tragic death of the lead contractor and injuries to four other workers.
Emergency response teams, including the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS), National Fire Force, National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, Sierra Leone Police, and local youth volunteers, swiftly mobilized to the scene. The SLRCS reported that psychological support has been provided to the bereaved family, while the deceased was transported to the Connaught Mortuary.
Authorities have advised residents to avoid the area until further notice, emphasizing the critical need for stringent safety protocols in construction work to prevent such incidents.
The NDMA confirmed that the building collapsed during a controlled demolition ordered by its owner. The agency had previously assessed the structure on August 31, 2024, and recommended immediate evacuation due to its deteriorating condition. Following this assessment, evacuation was completed in September 2024, and demolition commenced on January 8, 2025. Unfortunately, a section of the building collapsed during the demolition, trapping five contractors on-site.
A multi-agency search and rescue operation was quickly coordinated, resulting in the rescue of four workers, who sustained severe injuries. The lead contractor was found deceased under the rubble.
One survivor noted that all five individuals trapped were actively engaged in the demolition process. The deceased’s remains were taken to the Connaught Hospital Mortuary, accompanied by grieving relatives.
The NDMA has initiated an investigation to determine whether the contractors hired for the demolition were qualified and adhered to safety protocols. The agency stressed the importance of employing certified professionals for high-risk activities to prevent future tragedies.
In a statement, the NDMA reminded the public of the necessity for proper technical supervision of construction projects and the hiring of qualified personnel for controlled demolitions to safeguard lives and property.
The agency extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and has pledged support for burial arrangements during this difficult time.
