The Freetown City Council (FCC) has announced plans to begin the removal of unauthorized billboards, posters, banners, and signage across the city starting Friday, May 9, 2025.
This initiative follows a directive from the Ministry of Information and Civic Education issued on May 2, 2025, and an earlier notice from the FCC dated November 11, 2024. The enforcement will be conducted under Statutory Instrument No. 4 of 2010—the Freetown City Council Statutory Nuisance Byelaws, 2010—aligning with government orders.
The decision was made after a special stakeholder meeting convened by the Office of the Chief Minister. Beginning Friday, FCC officials, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Sierra Leone Police, and the Sierra Leone Roads Authority, will carry out a city-wide operation to dismantle all illegal advertising structures.
The Council has urged individuals and businesses responsible for unauthorized installations to remove them immediately or regularize their status by applying for permits through the FCC Billboards and Banners Unit. The revenue generated from these permits supports essential municipal services.
Additionally, the FCC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with a government-appointed Inter-agency Technical Team to review regulations aimed at minimizing public nuisance and restoring order in the city.
This notice, issued on May 5, 2025, is part of the Council’s broader efforts to enhance Freetown’s aesthetics and improve living conditions for residents.
