Senior Lecturer at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and leading flagbearer aspirant of the All People’s Congress, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, has urged FBC lecturers to take the lead in adopting artificial intelligence and digital technologies to transform teaching, research, and academic administration.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Academic Staff Association of Fourah Bay College, ASA-FBC, Staff Training Workshop, Prof. Bangura said universities must move beyond reacting to technological change and instead drive innovation in higher education.
The workshop was held under the theme: “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence, Digital Research Tools and Learning Management Systems for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Academic Administration.”
Addressing lecturers, administrators and college management, Prof. Bangura described AI as a tool to enhance scholarship.
“Artificial intelligence must support, not substitute, the work of academics,” he said. “The core duties of university lecturers — fostering critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, ethical reasoning and mentorship — remain fundamental and cannot be automated.”
He called on FBC faculty to integrate digital research tools and learning management systems into their work to improve efficiency, expand access to knowledge, and better prepare students for a digital economy. He stressed that this must be done without compromising academic standards.
Prof. Bangura further emphasized that universities have a responsibility to lead national conversations on AI, establish ethical frameworks for its use, and ensure that innovation aligns with Sierra Leone’s development goals.
The ASA-FBC training brought together academic staff from across Fourah Bay College to explore practical ways of applying AI and digital platforms to strengthen teaching, research and administration.
