Several fatalities have been reported along the Mile 91-Moyamba highway following a serious accident involving a 40-foot container truck on Sunday morning. Eyewitnesses indicate that the vehicle, registered as ARN-557 and reportedly owned by an individual named Maada, lost control due to brake failure, veering off the highway and crashing into nearby bushland.
Initial assessments confirm multiple injuries, and authorities are currently investigating the incident. Early findings suggest mechanical failure as the primary cause, a recurring issue for long-distance vehicles operating on Sierra Leone’s roads. Many of these trucks are aged, poorly maintained, and ill-suited for the challenging road conditions.
This latest tragedy has reignited calls for stricter vehicle inspection regulations, enhanced road safety standards, and accountability from both vehicle owners and regulatory agencies. Advocates for road safety warn that without immediate action, more lives are at risk from preventable accidents.
The Mile 91-Moyamba crash serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers present on Sierra Leone’s highways. Experts emphasize that unless the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority implements systemic reforms to phase out dilapidated vehicles and enforce routine inspections, the nation will continue to bear the heavy toll of such incidents.
