Health Minister to Face Parliament Today on Readiness for Mpox

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has summoned the Minister of Health to brief Members of Parliament on the country’s readiness to manage the ongoing Monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak. The session is scheduled for today, May 13, 2025, at 10:00 AM in the Chamber of Parliament.

This meeting follows the last adjournment and aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of Sierra Leone (Act No. 6) of 1991. During the session, the Minister will provide an overview of the health system’s response to the outbreak, addressing concerns and detailing the measures taken to prevent further spread of the virus. Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to question the Minister regarding the health system’s state and the actions being implemented to contain the virus.

As of the latest data, Sierra Leone has reported a total of 1,815 confirmed Mpox cases, with 1,433 still active. The country has seen 140 new cases, while 7 patients have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 371. The outbreak has also resulted in 11 fatalities, affecting both males and females, with confirmed cases comprising 969 males and 846 females. The Western Urban and Western Rural areas are the most impacted, with Western Urban alone accounting for 1,200 cases.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend, and media outlets, including SLBC TV/Radio, have been requested to broadcast the proceedings live.
