The Minister of Youth Affairs, Hon. Ibrahim Sannoh, has collaborated with the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) to address pressing human rights issues affecting young people in Sierra Leone.
During a recent meeting, CHRDI’s Executive Director, Mr. Andrew Fatorma, presented the organization’s latest Human Rights Monitoring Visitation Report, which highlights critical issues such as over-detention, challenges in accessing bail, and concerning trends in custodial practices observed from April to May 2025.
Minister Sannoh expressed his appreciation for the report’s findings, acknowledging CHRDI’s commitment to accountability and justice. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to championing youth rights, stating, “We are ready to partner with CHRDI on impactful initiatives, especially at a time when, according to the Status of Youth Report, 39% of young people in Sierra Leone say they do not trust the justice system.”
The meeting aimed to enhance collaboration on key areas including Youth in Governance, Human Rights, Rule of Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Youth, Peace, and Security. A significant outcome of the discussion was the mutual commitment to establish a youth parliament, envisioned as a national platform to amplify young voices in governance and policy development.
This initiative seeks to foster leadership, encourage civic participation, and ensure that youth perspectives are integral to decision-making processes, reflecting a proactive approach to addressing the concerns of young people in the country and safeguarding their human rights.
