The Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay, has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding the $25 security fee at Freetown’s airport, clarifying that the fee falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, not his own.

In a recent interview, Minister Turay stated, “The $25 fee is part of an agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and Securiport. The Ministry of Internal Affairs oversees the monitoring and management of these funds.”

Additionally, the minister provided an update on the new ferry service designed to enhance maritime transport between Freetown and Lungi. Despite initial technical difficulties with one of the ramps, which was not the correct type, he assured the public that the ferries are now operational. “The management and owner have been cooperative, and we are working to resolve the matter,” he noted.

Turay emphasized that the ferries will adhere to safety and accessibility standards once fully operational. The new service is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and offer a faster alternative for travelers, ultimately improving transportation along the crucial Freetown-Lungi corridor.
