Marie Stopes has launched an initiative in Kailahun to promote awareness of Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) among local school health clubs. The primary goal of this engagement was to educate teenagers about family planning and the risks associated with early sexual activity, fostering informed discussions on sexual health within the community.

In an interview with SLBC Kailahun, Adama Doncas Koroma, the Regional Integrated Marketing Lead, highlighted the importance of involving teenagers in these critical conversations. Four school health clubs—NSSK, MSSK, LIA, and Ahmadiyya Secondary Schools—participated alongside their mentors, emphasizing a collaborative approach to education.

“We want to educate them on the importance of safe sex, family planning, and the dangers of teenage or unwanted pregnancies, as well as the effects of unsafe sex that can lead to STIs,” Koroma stated.

The event featured several presentations covering essential topics such as early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and various family planning methods. Presenter Marian Ngobeh focused on the abstinence method, urging participants to prioritize their education over sexual activities. Attendees expressed gratitude to Marie Stopes for this timely initiative, with many committing to share the information with their peers to extend the reach of these vital messages.

Mentor Mr. Musa, representing one of the school health clubs, addressed the challenges faced within the community regarding SRHR education. He noted that perceptions, traditions, and religious beliefs often hinder progress. Musa encouraged parents to engage their children in early discussions about sexual health, fostering a better understanding of their sexual rights.

He described this initiative by Marie Stopes as a significant step toward empowering teenagers in Kailahun, equipping them with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
