FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — On July 15, 2025, Dr. Ali Bin Sammikh Marri, the Minister of Labor of the State of Qatar, met with His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio at State House. The visit aimed to reinforce Qatar’s commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation with Sierra Leone, particularly in labor and employment sectors.
During the meeting, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Labor and Employment, Mr. Mohamed Rahman Swaray, introduced the Qatari delegation. He highlighted that Minister Marri’s official visit was intended to explore avenues for collaboration between the two nations’ labor ministries.
Minister Marri expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received and shared his personal connection to Sierra Leone, recalling his academic experience studying the country over three decades ago. “It is a pleasure to be here,” he remarked. “I wrote about Sierra Leone as a student, and now I am here to discuss potential collaborations, especially in labor market policies. With Your Excellency serving as Chairman of ECOWAS, we see a significant opportunity to align our efforts in regional labor development.”
He also conveyed congratulations from Qatar’s Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, to President Bio for his recent appointment as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
In response, President Bio welcomed Minister Marri and expressed his appreciation for both the visit and the Emir’s message. He noted the significance of the Qatari Minister’s visit, especially considering his prior academic engagement with Sierra Leone.
“Thank you for your visit,” President Bio stated. “On behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone, we extend a warm welcome to you.” He emphasized the potential for broader labor collaboration within the ECOWAS region during his tenure, highlighting the importance of international partnerships in advancing shared interests across Africa. “This is an exciting moment to lead ECOWAS, and I see it as an opportunity to engage the international community on our common priorities for West Africa,” he concluded.
