The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has unveiled a Mobile Licensing Vehicle (MLV) designed to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of vehicle licensing services nationwide.
The launch event, held at the Youyi Building, was officiated by Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Rex Bhonafa.
In his remarks, Deputy Executive Director of the SLRSA, Mr. Josie Abraham Scott Manga, highlighted the significance of the MLV in reaching citizens in remote and underserved regions. “This initiative is aimed at overcoming the challenges many face when renewing licenses or registering new vehicles,” he stated, emphasizing the Authority’s dedication to service, innovation, and integrity.
Executive Director Mr. James Baggie Bio added that the MLV initiative is a direct response to feedback from transport stakeholders regarding the hurdles encountered in the licensing process. “The mobile unit will travel to various locations to ensure our services are more accessible,” he explained. Bio also announced the establishment of new licensing stations in Jui and Milton Margai, which will serve the Jui and Goderich communities, respectively. Additionally, he revealed plans for a second MLV focused specifically on issuing driver’s licenses, furthering the Authority’s goal of decentralizing licensing operations across Sierra Leone.
Deputy Minister Bhonafa encouraged transport stakeholders to take full advantage of this innovative service, reiterating President Bio’s commitment to improving service delivery. He also informed attendees that the Ministry has ratified the African Road Safety Charter, a significant step toward enhancing road safety standards throughout the country.
Transport stakeholders voiced their support for the MLV. Mr. Momodu Koroma, Vice President of the drivers’ union, praised the SLRSA’s inclusive approach and commended the Executive Director for involving stakeholders in critical decisions. He called for continued collaboration to bolster road safety in Sierra Leone. Similar sentiments were echoed by the President of the Keke Riders’ Union and a representative from the bike riders’ union, both of whom recognized the MLV as a significant advancement in transport sector service delivery.
