President Julius Maada Bio has proclaimed significant advancements in the education sector, announcing the successful training of over 20,000 teachers. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in the country’s efforts to enhance human capital development.
During a recent address, President Bio reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to the educational agenda, a vital element of the “Big Five” Game Changers initiative. He also announced the construction of 1,500 new classrooms aimed at improving the overall quality of education.
“In our push for enhanced digital literacy, we have trained over 20,000 teachers and built 1,500 new classrooms,” President Bio remarked. “Education is central to our social contract with the people.”
The President highlighted ongoing efforts to restore educational opportunities for young people, particularly those lacking access to formal education and university programs. Initiatives in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) have been launched to bolster the country’s middle-skilled workforce. A number of technical centers and universities have been established, alongside certification programs for informal workers nationwide.
Additionally, the introduction of a National Research and Innovation Policy aims to elevate the academic institutions, fostering both industrial growth and economic development.
On the topic of gender equality, President Bio reiterated his government’s commitment to implementing the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act. He noted increasing representation of women in various sectors, bolstered by new legislation targeting child marriage and child protection. Social protection programs have also expanded, benefiting over 84,000 elderly citizens and 11,000 vulnerable women across the country.
“Radical inclusion is enhancing the participation of women and girls in both formal and informal education,” he stated. “We are enforcing the GEWE Act and instituting new registration processes to curtail child marriage.”
President Bio also highlighted that over 250 young women have received training in digital business, with hundreds of youths acquiring skills in welding, mechanics, and entrepreneurship.
Finally, he announced the extension of internet access to more than 10,000 students, the digitization of government services, and the launch of the first national digital identity platform.
“Technology is no longer a luxury; it is essential for job creation and effective governance,” the President concluded, positioning the nation toward a more digital and inclusive future.
