On the second day of the TICAD9 summit in Yokohama, Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, engaged in pivotal discussions with Japan’s Foreign Minister, aiming to empower Africa’s youth through strengthened educational initiatives and sectoral collaborations.

During their meeting, Dr. Sengeh extended an invitation to Japan to participate in the upcoming Sierra Leone Investment Forum, scheduled for the following day. This forum seeks to promote greater private sector engagement in the country.

Sierra Leone’s strategy at TICAD9 emphasizes the urgent need for immediate action. With approximately 70 percent of its population under the age of 30, the nation is committed to developing systems that provide young people with access to essential tools, networks, and opportunities. This includes fostering partnerships with countries like Japan and implementing practical measures to integrate education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

In stark contrast to Sierra Leone’s youth demographic, less than 20 percent of Japan’s population is under 25. This disparity underscores the significance of youth and opportunity as central themes for Sierra Leone’s participation at TICAD9.

Later in the day, Dr. Sengeh participated in a panel discussion hosted by UNIDO, where he emphasized the vital role of youth in the industrial sector. He outlined Sierra Leone’s innovative approach, utilizing regulatory sandboxes to promote live innovation, particularly in education and financial services. Additionally, he discussed initiatives aimed at leveraging digital systems to minimize trade barriers under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Throughout the day, Dr. Sengeh conducted several high-level meetings with leaders from the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Zambian government. A common focus in these discussions was the essential need to involve more young people in leadership roles and developmental processes.
