Makeni, September 16, 2025 — Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, announced a significant 50% surge in visitor numbers from key source markets in 2024 compared to previous years. She made this announcement during the Civic Day Series, organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at UNIMAK Hall in Makeni, where she joined fellow ministers and government officials to discuss national development priorities.
In her address, Minister Tunis detailed the achievements and challenges faced by her Ministry while emphasizing the critical role of citizen engagement in sustaining tourism growth. “Tourism is not just a government initiative; it is a national movement that requires the active participation of every Sierra Leonean,” she stated. She called on citizens to become “Tourism Ambassadors” by sharing positive narratives about the country, highlighting that effective storytelling is essential for boosting tourist arrivals.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the organizers of the Civic Day Series, reaffirming her Ministry’s commitment to raising tourism awareness among citizens. She underscored that promoting Sierra Leone’s positive image is a key component of the Ministry’s vision for the Year of Ecotourism. Tunis urged all Sierra Leoneans to embrace their civic duties in showcasing the nation’s beauty and potential to the global community.
