Parliament Empowers Journalists to Elevate Democratic Reporting

Parliament of Sierra Leone hosted a comprehensive training session for members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery

On October 22, 2025, the Parliament of Sierra Leone hosted a comprehensive training session for members of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, focusing on the theme: “Enhancing Parliamentary Journalism for Effective Democratic Governance.” The event took place in Committee Room One of the Parliament Building.

The Deputy Clerk of Parliament, Gilbert Bosco N’habay, opened the session by welcoming participants and emphasizing Parliament’s commitment to fostering a collaborative relationship with the press. He urged journalists to maintain objectivity and accuracy in their reporting of parliamentary proceedings.

Interim President of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, Feima Sesay, expressed gratitude for the support they have received from Parliament over the years. She highlighted the significance of responsible reporting, noting that the role of parliamentary journalists extends beyond mere coverage to ensuring the dissemination of accurate information regarding Parliament’s activities.

Yeanor Kabia, President of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union, stressed the importance of objectivity in reporting on national issues. She commended Parliament for its ongoing support for the Press Gallery.

Mabinty Magdalene Kamara, Vice President of Women in the Media, praised the capacity-building initiatives organized by Parliament. She underscored the need for ethical reporting, stating, “Our work as parliamentary reporters is critical and must be done responsibly.” Kamara also acknowledged Parliament’s efforts toward gender inclusivity.

Manika Kamara, President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, extended thanks to Parliament’s leadership for creating a conducive environment for reporting. He urged continued training to enhance the effectiveness of parliamentary journalists and reinforced the importance of ethical reporting.

The Deputy Leader of Government Business 2, Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina, highlighted the vital role of journalism in nation-building. He encouraged media representatives to practice responsible reporting on parliamentary activities, recognizing their influence in promoting peace and stability in the country.

In his keynote address, Clerk of Parliament Karmoh Conteh conveyed his strong respect for the press, identifying it as a crucial mechanism for holding Parliament accountable. He urged journalists to familiarize themselves with parliamentary procedures to ensure accurate reporting. He also expressed gratitude to President Bio for repealing Part V of the Public Order Act of 1965, emphasizing that while positive news is encouraged, responsible reporting on negative issues is equally important. Conteh concluded by calling for improved dress standards among journalists and the issuance of identity cards for accredited reporters.

The session was moderated by Sulaiman Bah, Principal Public Relations Officer of the Press Gallery, and concluded with a series of training presentations. Topics covered included “Understanding Parliament,” “Techniques of Effective Reporting,” and “Ethical Journalism,” delivered by various facilitators.
