During the Government’s weekly press conference, Francess Piagie Alghali, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the significant role the United Nations has played in the nation’s development, particularly over its 65-year membership. Speaking on October 21, 2025, she praised the UN’s contributions to human rights advancements and the post-civil war reforms that have shaped Sierra Leone.
As the UN approaches its 80th anniversary, Minister Alghali reflected on the longstanding partnership, highlighting Sierra Leone as a prime example of successful UN peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts. She noted that the UN was instrumental in ending the civil conflict and facilitating the country’s reconstruction.
However, she stressed the need for reform within the UN, particularly the Security Council, stating, “After eighty years of existence, the United Nations needs reform to reflect the realities of the present world.” While celebrating the UN’s past successes, Alghali called for modernization to ensure the organization adapts to contemporary global dynamics.
Her remarks included an overview of the extensive support Sierra Leone receives from various UN agencies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), which contribute to the nation’s development, health, and food security initiatives. In honor of the UN anniversary, Sierra Leone plans to host several events, including a flag-raising ceremony, a school quiz, a symposium, and a peace concert.
A central theme of her address was a strong appeal for change within the UN structure, particularly regarding the Security Council’s representation of Africa. Alghali described the current system as outdated and unjust, asserting that it fails to fairly represent African interests. She noted that President Julius Maada Bio is a staunch advocate for this necessary reform.
Alghali highlighted Sierra Leone’s transformation from a recipient of peacekeeping missions to a stable, peaceful nation as a testament to the power of effective international cooperation. She concluded by reiterating Sierra Leone’s commitment to its partnership with the UN while asserting that the institution must evolve to amplify Africa’s voice in global decision-making.
