In a collaborative effort to address traffic congestion in Freetown, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, alongside the Motor Drivers Union and various transport stakeholders, has announced the temporary reopening of the East and West corridors. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and facilitate smoother movement for vehicles and passengers throughout the city.
This decision comes in light of the ongoing transportation challenges faced by Freetown, particularly due to the limited availability of Waka Fine buses, which has struggled to keep pace with the demands of the city’s growing population. The authorities anticipate that these temporary measures will significantly reduce congestion, minimize travel delays, and alleviate the strain on both commuters and local businesses.
Starting Wednesday, November 5, 2025, the East-West transit route will implement the following traffic regulations:
- Commercial vehicles, including buses, Poda Podas, and tricycles (Kekehs), will be permitted to utilize the East and West corridors throughout the day.
- Commercial motorbikes will be prohibited from accessing the Central Business District (CBD).
- Waka Fine bus stops will be designated exclusively for Waka Fine buses.
Additionally, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and other transport stakeholders will launch extensive awareness campaigns in all parks to educate drivers on the updated traffic laws and regulations.
Officials indicated that these temporary arrangements are part of a larger strategy to enhance road safety, improve the commuter experience, and create a more efficient transportation system in Freetown.
