Kenema, Sierra Leone In a decisive move to enhance public health and combat illegal drug trafficking, the Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, in collaboration with local law enforcement, conducted a significant operation leading to the destruction of illicit drugs valued at more than 172 million Leones.
The operation, which took place in various hotspots throughout Kenema, was spearheaded by Thomas Ade Williams, Chairman of the Task Force on Drugs in the Eastern Region. Williams emphasized that this effort is part of a broader strategy to dismantle drug networks and protect community well-being.
During the extensive raids, teams from the Pharmacy Board and the Sierra Leone Police inspected several sites, including warehouses, markets, and pharmaceutical outlets, resulting in the confiscation of a substantial quantity of controlled substances, notably Tramadol. The seized drugs were subsequently incinerated at the Tilorma Dumping Site under rigorous oversight to ensure safety and accountability, with security personnel, civil society representatives, and community members present.
“This operation clearly signals our government’s zero tolerance for illicit drug trade,” stated Williams, reiterating the Pharmacy Board’s commitment to safeguarding public health.
Allieu Katta, the Pharmacy Board’s Focal Person, highlighted that the incineration was conducted under strict controlled conditions to prevent any future misuse. He also noted ongoing efforts with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to enhance enforcement measures and raise public awareness about the dangers associated with drug abuse.
Katta encouraged citizens to report any suspicious drug activities and to seek medical attention only at licensed facilities, stating, “This initiative transcends law enforcement; it is about saving lives and ensuring community safety.”
Looking forward, the Pharmacy Board plans to implement community outreach and educational programs aimed at young people and vulnerable groups. These initiatives are designed to address the root causes of drug abuse and complement law enforcement efforts.
This operation marks a significant step in the fight against illicit drugs, demonstrating a proactive approach by the Pharmacy Board in promoting public health and safety across the nation.
