The course, aimed at enhancing leadership capacity for the design, advocacy, and implementation of effective road safety programs and policies, was organized by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s International Injury Research Unit in collaboration with the Global Road Safety Partnership and the Initiative for Global Road Safety, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Running from September to November, the intensive online and in-person program provided participants with a platform for leadership development, knowledge sharing, and strategic planning. Focus areas included evidence-based policymaking, behavioral change, and data-driven solutions.

“This program equips senior road safety leaders with the tools to deliver measurable impact,” stated Dr. Abdulgafoor Bachani, Director of the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit. He highlighted the significance of hosting the course in Africa for the first time, noting it as an opportunity to strengthen local and regional efforts to reduce road trauma.

Through the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), Bloomberg Philanthropies aims to decrease road crash fatalities and injuries by partnering with governments and organizations to implement effective interventions, strengthen data systems, and support necessary policy reforms within the road safety ecosystem.

Participants committed to leveraging their training to improve coordination among stakeholders, align their efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and enhance leadership at both national and local levels.

Reflecting on his experience, Abu-bakarr Sheriff Esq. remarked that the course equipped him with both theoretical insights and practical skills to address road safety challenges. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to share the knowledge gained with colleagues back home.

“The course has deepened my understanding of the theoretical frameworks in road safety management and provided me with strategic leadership skills to engage diverse partners in our mutual goal of reducing road trauma,” Sheriff Esq. affirmed.
