NDMA Marks Leadership Transition with Handing-Over Ceremony

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) celebrated a significant leadership transition with a handing-over ceremony on November 21, 2025.

In his farewell address, outgoing Director General, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Brima Sesay, reflected on the agency’s remarkable progress, emphasizing capacity building and institutional strengthening during his tenure. He highlighted notable achievements, including the establishment of regional and district structures, enhanced visibility of the agency, the creation of crucial institutional documents, increased community disaster resilience, and the promotion of gender inclusion through the establishment of a Gender Coordinator Office at the senior management level.

Expressing heartfelt appreciation to his Deputy, now the incoming Director General, Sesay stated, “None of these milestones would have been achieved without the unwavering support and partnership of my Deputy.” He concluded on an emotional note, thanking NDMA staff for their dedication and wishing the new leadership continued success.

Newly appointed Deputy Director General, Sulaiman B. Sowa, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and thanked President Julius Maada Bio for his trust. He pledged loyalty to the new Director General, John Vandy Rogers, and reaffirmed his commitment to the agency’s mission. Sowa emphasized his eagerness to learn from staff and contribute to the agency’s ongoing development.

Director General John Vandy Rogers paid tribute to his predecessor, describing him as a resilient leader with whom he had navigated numerous challenges and successes. He assured partners and the public of his commitment to building upon the solid foundation laid by Sesay.

“We will continue from where he has stopped and ensure that our mandate is fully delivered,” he affirmed. Vandy Rogers highlighted the importance of discipline, punctuality, and teamwork, reiterating the agency’s dedication to fostering a productive working environment for partners and stakeholders.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed sense of unity and purpose among the NDMA leadership. With the transition complete, the agency is poised to enhance disaster preparedness and strengthen resilience across Sierra Leone.
