In a decisive effort to uphold political decorum, the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) has imposed a fine of NLe350,000 on the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) for inflammatory statements made during a recent rally.
On February 2, 2026, the PPRC announced that the fines are a result of violations of the Political Parties Act of 2022, specifically citing remarks made by National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya, which incurred a penalty of NLe200,000 under Section 39(1)(c), and Zainab Sheriff, who was fined NLe150,000 for infractions under Section 39(1)(d).
The infractions occurred during the APC’s significant “Mammoth” rally at Atouga Mini Stadium in Freetown on January 31, 2026. PPRC officials described the statements as “profane, obscene, provocative, and inciting,” raising concerns about their potential to incite unrest.
This action comes after a prior warning issued by the PPRC on November 11, 2025, which flagged the party’s ongoing non-compliance with Section 39 of the Act. The PPRC expressed disappointment over the APC’s failure to rectify its conduct despite previous cautions.
The party has been given seven days to pay the fines, with the PPRC warning that failure to comply will result in further penalties as stipulated by the legislation. As of now, APC representatives have not publicly addressed the sanctions, which arrive amidst heightened political tensions in Sierra Leone.
