The Orange Foundation Sierra Leone has officially launched its Back-to-School Donation initiative, set to support 2,000 disadvantaged pupils across selected schools in Freetown. The initiative kicked off on January 16, 2026, at Police Primary School in Kingtom, where 150 underprivileged students received essential educational materials.

Each pupil was given an Orange Foundation-branded school bag filled with exercise books, mathematical sets, pens, and pencils, aimed at easing the financial burden on their families and enhancing academic development.

During the launch, Orange Sierra Leone’s Chief Executive Officer, Madam Aicha Toure, emphasized that the initiative aims to motivate students, improve learning outcomes, and encourage regular school attendance. She spoke to the transformative power of education, recalling its impact on her own family’s life, and reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that no child is disadvantaged due to socio-economic circumstances.

Madam Toure commended parents, teachers, and community leaders for their dedication to educational equity, asserting that investing in children is integral to the future of Sierra Leone. She encouraged recipients to return to school with confidence and ambition, as the future belongs to them.

Madam Annie Wunie Katta, Director of the Orange Foundation Sierra Leone, highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader commitment to uplift vulnerable children nationwide. She explained that education remains a core focus of the Foundation’s efforts, alongside health and culture. Katta noted that the Foundation’s outreach extends beyond traditional classrooms and has benefited over 35,000 children in 16 African countries, with a goal of inclusivity.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Mr. Conrad Sackey, recognized the crucial moment for Sierra Leone’s children, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility among government, private sector, and communities. He praised the Back-to-School initiative as a beacon of hope and resilience.

The Minister reiterated the necessity of ensuring that education remains a right for every child, not a privilege, aligning with the Ministry’s pledge to promote access, equity, and equality in education.
