The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has delivered 350 metric tons of rice to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) to bolster the National School Feeding Programme. This significant donation, made possible through support from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was presented during a formal event at the Ministry of Agriculture’s warehouse in Bo City.
The rice will play a crucial role in the Government’s Free Quality Education initiative, which aims to improve school attendance, retention, and academic performance among students. Deputy Minister of Agriculture II, Sahr Hemore, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to fostering the health and educational success of schoolchildren nationwide.
Receiving the donation on behalf of MBSSE, Permanent Secretary Brima Sowa reiterated the importance of the School Feeding Programme, launched by President Julius Maada Bio in 2018, as a complementary effort to the Free Quality Education initiative. “Providing meals to students is essential for their ability to learn effectively and remain in school,” Sowa emphasized.
He lauded the donation as a substantial relief for the Ministry, encouraging further contributions from stakeholders committed to educational advancement. However, Sowa issued a warning regarding the rice’s usage, insisting that it is intended solely for student consumption and must not be sold in local markets.
