In a significant step toward enhancing national security, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) on February 13, 2026, destroyed an impressive 4,692 offensive weapons in a public exercise aimed at safeguarding the community and curtailing the proliferation of illegal arms. The destruction took place at ODHAV Multi Industries in Songo, under the supervision of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, the Regional Commander for Freetown-East.
The event garnered attention from high-ranking officials, including divisional commanders and operational officers, as well as local media representatives. Notable attendees included Superintendent Bankolay Mansaray, Local Unit Commander of the Waterloo Division, Chief Superintendent John B. Koroma, Local Unit Commander of the Masiaka Division, and Assistant Superintendent Francis Momodu Tommy, Regional Operations Officer.
The cache of weapons consisted of various melee items such as knives, swords, cutlasses, and axes. To prevent any potential misuse, these items were thoroughly melted down.
The origins of the weapons trace back to September 23, 2025, when they were discovered by the Sierra Leone Port and Harbour Authority during a routine inspection. Subsequent investigations revealed that the weapons had been concealed within three vehicles and were not listed on the shipping manifest. The consignor, reportedly residing in Maryland, USA, declined to take responsibility for the shipment.
Upon the directives of Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, the Freetown-East Regional Command executed the secure destruction of the weapons in the interests of public safety. AIG Kanneh emphasized the police force’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, reiterating that the SLP will continue to collaborate with partners to impede the spread of illegal and offensive weapons throughout Sierra Leone.
This destruction initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the Sierra Leone Police to enhance community safety and combat crime nationwide.
