President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has launched an ambitious 300-day campaign aimed at accelerating essential healthcare services, with a specific focus on reducing maternal mortality rates. The initiative was announced during the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, where President Bio urged fellow African leaders and development partners to collaborate with Sierra Leone in this urgent endeavor.

In his address to delegates, President Bio described the campaign as a targeted, time-sensitive effort to bolster maternal health interventions, particularly in regions where progress has been lacking. “We continue to witness too many maternal deaths due to the inconsistent application of known solutions,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of discipline, accountability, and sustained political commitment in addressing the issue.

Key components of the campaign include:

  • Continuous care for pregnant women throughout their pregnancies
  • Promotion of safe delivery practices
  • Rapid responses to complications
  • Comprehensive postnatal follow-ups

President Bio stressed that reducing maternal mortality requires more than just rhetoric; it demands effective decision-making, strong healthcare systems, and measurable outcomes. “Our progress will be monitored closely, reported openly, and evaluated by the number of lives saved,” he noted.

This initiative aligns with a broader movement across Africa to improve maternal and child health outcomes, positioning Sierra Leone as a regional model for translating political will into tangible results. By inviting collaboration among African leaders and partners, President Bio aims to foster a collective commitment to saving lives.
