The trial of Lansana Dumbuya, National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), was abruptly suspended on February 16, 2026. Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah and state prosecutors exited the courtroom due to overcrowding and disputes over the size of the defense team.
Initially scheduled to continue today, the proceedings were disrupted by the presence of over 100 lawyers, far exceeding the magistrate’s request to limit the defense to 15 legal representatives and the prosecution to two. This overwhelming turnout created a disorganized atmosphere, prompting both Magistrate Jah and the state prosecution to abandon the bench without addressing the case.
Dumbuya remains in custody at the Pademba Road Correctional Centre, as frustrations over the trial’s handling grew among observers. Ibrahim Sorie, a courtroom observer, characterized the situation as “extremely troubling,” expressing concerns over the implications for the future of democracy in Sierra Leone. Dumbuya faces charges under the Public Order Act of 1965, alongside unspecified inchoate allegations.
Witnesses reported that the presiding magistrate left the courtroom without explanation, departing before any proceedings could begin. Critics noted that this adjournment, made without scheduling a future date, was indicative of a justice system under strain. “This act not only delays justice but raises significant questions about the judiciary’s commitment to fairness and transparency,” stated one observer, stressing the need for due process.
Concerns have also been raised about the conduct of court officials, with some suggesting a “bullying attitude” that detracts from public trust in the judiciary. The observer warned that such instances risk undermining democratic governance and eroding confidence in the legal system.
As of this report, no official statement has been issued by the court regarding the adjournment. Efforts to gather remarks from judicial authorities continue as the case hangs in limbo without a designated new court date.
In response to these developments, Osman Foday Yansaneh, Chairman of the APC, announced an emergency meeting for February 17, 2026. The meeting aims to unify party members and strategize on the path forward for Dumbuya and related party matters.
