The National Protected Area Authority is moving ahead with plans to demolish illegal structures at Aberdeen Creek, after completing a full threat assessment and security review this week.
The assessment was led by NPAA Deputy Executive Director Dwight Z.K. Sheriff alongside the Operational Commander of the Aberdeen Police Division. Officials evaluated key areas including security risks, boundary lines, logistics, and personnel needs for the operation.
Police also determined the number of officers required to secure the site during the exercise.
According to the NPAA, swift action is necessary to address what it described as growing public misperceptions about the Authority and to show its commitment to enforcing protected-area laws.
“We are determined to carry out this exercise in a professional, coordinated and orderly manner,” an NPAA official said.
Ahead of the demolition, the Authority said it has held two rounds of community engagement with residents to notify them of the planned operation and allow for preparations.
With security planning now complete, the NPAA stated that the Aberdeen Creek demolition exercise is expected to take place “anytime soon.”
The operation targets encroachments within the protected wetland area, which environmentalists and city planners have long flagged as vulnerable to flooding and environmental degradation.
The NPAA warned that further enforcement actions will follow in other protected areas across Freetown if compliance is not achieved.
