FREETOWN — The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected slow economic growth for Sierra Leone in 2027, with figures indicating that neighbouring countries are expected to maintain stronger growth than Sierra Leone over the period.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, the IMF projects economic growth of 4.5 percent in each of the next two years, supported by adjustments in global supply chains, favourable export conditions and the effects of earlier economic reforms.
The institution noted challenges including weaker growth prospects and limited foreign buffers. For countries such as Sierra Leone, these pressures could constrain the ability of government to respond to economic shocks and protect vulnerable households.
The IMF has recommended sustainable economic policies, including saving temporary gains from higher commodity prices and using available resources to support vulnerable populations.
While the latest projection points to a gradual improvement in Sierra Leone’s economic performance, the country’s ability to translate growth into improved living conditions will depend on how effectively it manages economic pressures, strengthens resilience and supports livelihoods.
