Kargbo Hails Speaker Thomas as Opposition MPs Retake Seats in Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Segepoh Solomon Thomas on Tuesday welcomed Opposition Members of Parliament back to the House, saying their return affirms their mandate to serve the people who elected them.

Addressing the chamber, Thomas said he was “extremely proud” of the Opposition for resuming duties and stressed that nothing should prevent MPs from representing their constituents. “Please use the Well of Parliament as an open space to advocate for your people,” he urged.

Opposition Leader Abdul Kargbo credited Thomas with brokering the return, citing a series of meetings in the Speaker’s office and a subsequent session with President Julius Maada Bio that helped end the political standoff. “You facilitated a meeting that was very productive. You have shown exemplary leadership for which we will remain grateful,” Kargbo said.

Kargbo pressed for full implementation of the communiqué that paved the way for the Opposition’s return. He called for the Agreement for National Unity to be tabled in Parliament and for the creation of a committee to provide oversight of the Elections Management Body.

Responding, Thomas noted that Government Business leaders are currently attending official engagements at international parliaments. He assured the House that the concerns would be addressed once the SLPP leadership returns to Freetown.
